Wang Yigang
Heilongjigang (Cina), 1961
Wang Yigang, born in 1961 in Heilongjiang Province, is among China's best-known contemporary artists. Even before graduating in 1986, he received significant recognition, participating in the National Exhibition of Young Artists and winning a national prize. His painting is predominantly abstract, with occasional figurative references, and is based on the idea that narrative and logic are secondary to visual expression. Intense color and direct gesture are central elements of his language.
His production can be divided into several phases: an initial period influenced by Cubism and Futurism, followed by a phase closer to Pop Art, attentive to social and political themes and urban visual culture. Since 2000, he has rediscovered Chinese tradition, creating works based on traditional dyeing. His most recent phase is conceptual and entirely abstract. Wang works instinctively, without planning, constructing his works through layering of color and continuous transformations. In recent years, his painting has become freer and more vibrant, consolidating his success internationally.
